Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports the Cubs are calling up shortstop Starlin Castro and plan on inserting him into the lineup immediately.

The 20-year-old is hitting .376 with one homer, 14 extra-base hits and 20 RBI in 26 games with Double-A Tennessee.

Reports claim manager Lou Piniella plans to start Castro at short, move Ryan Theriot to second base and send Chad Tracy to the minors.

Cubs to call up shortstop Castro

Where do you think scouts base their opinions on players like Castro who have never been in the Major Leagues?

Thanks for your explanation, and I understand that pitchers aren't in their prime during spring training.  But hitters can hit.  This is not to say that coming off his 6-RBI debut that he is the next coming of Babe Ruth, but I still feel that this kid will provide a spark for this team.

They still are going to need A-Ram and DLee to hit or they will go nowhere.

Hey Lou! Give Colvin More Playing Time Too! That kid has potential also! We need a younger line-up with all these aging players we got!

In my opinion, he should've started the season in Chicago and not in Double-A.  Yes he is only 20 years old, but isn't Jason Heyward?  Castro is not the same player by any means and he may not even have the same success that is projected for Heyward, but I think the Cubs are giving themselves a fighting chance to salvage their season.  He's got all the tools needed to be a great player and I am excited to see him play.

Remember folks...he is just a 20 year old rookie coming from double A.....this is not the second coming of A-Rod!

I think this is a good move.  If Castro can continue hitting in the majors, I see the Cubs adding both speed and defense by calling him up.

right, because spring training is known for having the best major league pitching possible than at any other time of the season...good thing you are not a scout!

Welcome Addition

This season is slowly beginning to slip away, and while it's too early to call the season over, this may be the jolt to the lineup that we need.  Starlin has been raking in the minors and he proved in spring training that he can hit major league pitching.

Does this spell D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N or what?

Yet, I can hardly blame them. Let's see what the young man can do for the team.
