Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

Posted on: August 10, 2010 1:38 pm

SHEBOYGAN, Wisc. -- Whereas last week, he was evasive, on Tuesday, Tiger Woods was unequivocal.

Finally clearing up his feelings about whether he would accept a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup roster as a captain's pick, the world No. 1 blurted out a fast "yes," though he hopes it doesn't come to that.

Woods is 10th in Ryder Cup points and only the top eight earn automatic spots when the roster is finalized Sunday night. Four more captain's picks will be made by Corey Pavin in another three weeks. Pavin said he hoped to meet with Woods this week to gauge his interest in playing for the U.S. team after missing the last matches with a knee issue.

Woods said that meeting has not taken place and he hopes to make it moot.

"Haven't seen him and hopefully I won't be a pick," Woods said. "I would like to be able to play myself onto that team."

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

He will make the Ryder Cup a lot better just by being in it whether he plays well or not.  Bottom line is that Tiger Woods is good for golf no matter what.
You might want to ask the rest of us before you jump to conclusions buddy.  Last time I checked he was still one of the most popular and liked athletes in sports today.

Please stick to watching the hawks play avg ball.

you clearly know little about golf and that's OK - it's not for everyone.

but if you haven't heard - Tiger Woods has a terrible RC record and frankly is playing like a middle of the pack Q school qualifier.

thanks though.

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

Junky: If you were making a movie, that is how it would be scripted.  In the final scene when Tiger
makes an impossible putt to win the Ryder Cup, Elin runs up to him, throws her arms around Tiger
and proclaims her everlasting love as the fans chant TIGER TIGER TIGER.

If we lived in the world of Hollywood, that is how it would happen.

Doesnt everyone see

This is fate.

Its how it has to play out.

Tiger won't make the team on points. Lets put that to bed.

He will make the team as a captain's pick. He will play one event in the early going of the tournament. He will perform magically. He will find the "team player" in himself. He will be forgiven and embraced by his teammates. He will morph into a man that plays with USA on his sleave instead of "Team Tiger". He will lead the charge to an improbable Sunday rally with the US coming out on top.

The country will forgive him and Tiger will come back with a roar next year.

This is the classic redemption story. Tiger's legacy needs one. Its the part in the biography where the star hits rock bottom and then, against all odds, finds his way back to the top.

Its a story where with 20/20 we look back and we say "of course it had to happen this way".

The only difference is we have the chance to see this now.

The Junky

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

Daweman: I think the PGA is the last tournament that counts for Ryder cup points.  So Tiger doesn't have the "next 3 tournaments" to get it done, he has to do it this week or else.  At least the PGA is a double points event.

10 - 13 - 2

those are tigers lifetime stats on ryder cup teams. 10 wins 13 losses and 2 ties. he achieved these below average numbers while he was playing very good golf on the regular pga tour. What in the world would make you think he could help the ryder cup team now when his game is on the rocks ? the cup has never brought out his A game let someone else who is playing well be a captains pick. all tiger would be is a distraction.

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

Disagree gopack,  Tiger is a drag on the rest of the team and his losing record in every category except singles is an indication of that.  The USA's thumping of Europe in 2008 when Tiger had a gimpy knee says they can be more of a team without him.

As far as your opinion or feelings about his popularity, that's yours to keep. x

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

As in past Ryder Cups, it doesn't matter who is playing well going in.  This is a team event and how well everyone comes togther will determine the winner.

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

Come on, how quickly we forget.  This is after all Tiger Woods, forget all his troubles aside he is still the best player int he world who just happens not to be playing to his standards.  That is HIS standards.  Would we keep Nicklaus off the team 20 years ago when or if he went through a bad patch?  His experiance alone is worth having on the team over a player with 3 top 10s in the last 10 tournies who might be considered HOT.
He will be on this team, and he will be deserving so because of his 13 major championships, and 2864 tour wins.  Come on......

Tiger says he'd play Ryder as a captain's pick

how about letting the players decide, have  a secret ballot if he is picked by his peers   so be it. if not  voted onto the team by a MAJORITY, he should not be on the team. why doesnt he have enough  cojones to say im playing bad, pick someone else. he sure puts pavin between a rock and hard place. really, i dont  think it will matter as it looks like all the europeans are playing better than the ameircans right now.
